How Do We Use Sclerotherapy To Treat Spider Veins?

Published on November 12, 2015

Are you ashamed of having your varicose veins exposed? If you are struggle with varicose veins in your feet and your legs, you know that not only can they negatively impact your appearance, but over time they can cause you constant pain.

Your legs can begin to feel heavy and ache more when you have been sitting down or standing up for any length of time. Swelling and a throbbing pain can become a part of your normal day. In order to combat this problem, Sclerotherapy can help.

What is Sclerotherapy Treatment?

With Sclerotherapy, we use a solution that we inject into the affected veins. The solution acts as an irritant and makes the vein collapse. At that point, blood is forced to find another path and will flow to other healthy veins. The varicose vein will eventually retract into the body, fading away from your skin.

Note: Sclerotherapy is most effective for varicose veins that are not severe. This form of treatment has cosmetic benefits and it can relieve the pain associated with varicose veins in order to offer you a better quality of life.

What Can I Expect During My Varicose Veins Treatment?

We perform Sclerotherapy right from within our NYC and Scarsdale offices on an outpatient basis. We advise you to avoid blood thinners or pain relievers that can make you prone to bleeding before your procedure. You should not apply any kind of lotion to your legs or shave for at least 24 hours before you are undergoing sclerotherapy and you will want to wear comfortable pants that are loose on the day of your treatment.

Your procedure should take under an hour. You’ll be instructed to lie down on an examining table and your legs will be raised. The solution will be directly injected into your veins, causing them to close. While you are undergoing Sclerotherapy, you may experience cramping or stinging. Afterwards, you’ll be given compression stockings to apply pressure to the treated veins.

Recovery from Sclerotherapy

After your treatment session, you can go back to your normal routine. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least two weeks and you will need to wear compression stockings for up to several weeks for the most effective results. Depending on the size of your varicose veins, you could see the effects in a matter of weeks or it may take longer.
