What You Should Know About Juvederm Treatments in NYC

Published on October 12, 2014

Unlike Botox, which relaxes the muscles of the face, Juvederm is a wrinkle filling agent. It is designed to minimize the appearance of minor to moderate wrinkles, creating a youthful and plumper appearance. It is used below the skin rather than as an injection within the muscles and has very few potential complications or side effects.

As you age you lose tissue – Juvederm replaces this

One of the major signs of aging has nothing to do with sagging skin but rather a loss of tissue beneath the skin — this is what actually creates deeper lines and wrinkles. Juvederm is used to replace this lost tissue. A harmless liquid is injected below the wrinkles to reduce their appearance. Juvederm has a very small molecular structure so that it can smooth out wrinkles without looking unnatural.

Juvederm treatments need to be repeated after around four to six months. Because Juvederm is a harmless liquid, it will be absorbed into a person’s skin over time. How long it will take to be absorbed into the patient’s system generally depends on the patient and the amount of Juvederm used during the treatment. Side effects from Juvederm treatments are extremely minimal. Barring allergies and some redness at the injection site, there usually aren’t any significant problems.

Filler treatments such as Juvederm can usually be done over a lunch break and do not require any significant downtime. There may be some sensitivity in the injection spot following the injections. The dermatologist administering the Juvederm shots may numb the area with a topical solution beforehand to reduce any discomfort. Over-the-counter pain medications can be used to reduce any further discomfort or swelling.

Overall, Juvederm is a very easy and effective method of treating fine to moderate lines and wrinkles. It is best used around the mouth, nose and eyes. For most, it will have absolutely no side effects and it requires minimal recovery time. Patients who are interested in reducing the appearance of their fine lines and wrinkles will find this an excellent alternative to treatments such as Botox.
