Unleash the Power of Juvederm to Remove Facial Wrinkles
Published on February 5, 2015 by Westchester Center For Dermatology
The appearance of facial folds and wrinkles is a normal part of the aging process. Until recently dermatologists had very little in their arsenal that would lessen the appearance of folds and wrinkles other than surgery. Now, for residents of Scarsdale, there is Juvederm, an injectable facial filler that has been used by thousands of dermatologists and surgeons to minimize the appearance of deep folds and reduce wrinkles.
What is Juvederm?
Juvederm is made up of hyaluronic acid which is found in the skin and tissue of mammals. It was approved for human use by the FDA in 2006, primarily for the cosmetic improvement of deep “smile lines” that run from the corners of the nose to the mouth. It has also been approved for use as a lip enhancer, and as a filler for scars and hollow places anywhere on the skin.
Will I continue to need Juvederm treatments?
Hyaluronic acid fillers are absorbed by the body, usually within nine months, and require repeated injections to maintain the original effect. Juvederm works extremely well in cosmetic applications because the substance can absorb as much as a thousand times its weight in water, which adds volume and plumpness to the sagging skin being treated. The skin takes on a more youthful appearance without looking obviously treated, as can happen with some surgeries. Hyaluronic acid binds with collagen, which is the substance that composes and supports human skin, as well as with elastin, which moves more basic nutrients into the skin.
Are there any side effects to this treatment offered in Westchester County?
The potential risks and side effects of Juvederm when used to treat lines, folds and wrinkles are few, and are usually comprised of temporary redness, pain and tenderness during the injections as well as some swelling and bruising at the site. A skilled cosmetic dermatologist can minimize these reactions, which will disappear quickly on their own.
Rare side effects include immune reactions that can result in granulomas. For this reason, Juvederm should not be used in those patients who have severe allergies to bacterial proteins or patients who have ever suffered from an anaphalactic reaction to any substance. For the majority of patients, Juvederm is safe and extremely effective.
