What’s the Difference Between a Light, Medium, and Deep Chemical Peel?

You’ve probably seen the glow people get after a chemical peel, but not all peels work the same way. Some offer subtle refreshment. Others address deeper concerns like wrinkles or scars. Knowing the differences between a light, medium, and deep chemical peel helps you choose what’s right for your skin and your schedule.

What Does Chemical Peel Depth Mean?

Peels vary in strength based on how deeply they penetrate the skin. A light chemical peel treats the surface, a medium peel targets the upper dermis, and a deep peel reaches even deeper layers.

Each option removes damaged skin, promotes new cell growth, and can improve tone, texture, or signs of aging. But results, downtime, and risks vary significantly.

Light Chemical Peel

A light peel improves dullness, roughness, and mild discoloration. It often uses alpha-hydroxy acids, such as glycolic or lactic acid. You might feel some dryness or flaking for a day or two, but there’s little downtime. It’s ideal for routine brightening and maintaining overall clarity.

Medium Chemical Peel

This type goes deeper and uses more potent agents, such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA). It treats sun damage, fine lines, and uneven pigmentation. Expect visible peeling and redness for several days. Many people choose this option when they want visible results but don’t need—or can’t manage—the downtime of a deep peel.

Deep Chemical Peel

A deep peel uses phenol or other intensive agents to treat deeper wrinkles, scarring, and precancerous changes. Recovery can take up to two weeks, and the skin needs time and care to heal. This peel produces dramatic change, but it isn’t right for every skin type or concern.

How to Choose the Right Peel

The best chemical peel for your skin type depends on your goals, your skin’s sensitivity, and how much recovery time you can allow. What works for one person may be too much—or not enough—for another.

That’s why it’s essential to consult with an experienced dermatologist. At Westchester Cosmetic Dermatology, treatments are overseen by Dr. David Kriegel, a board-certified dermatologist with deep expertise in resurfacing procedures. In 2024, Dr. Kriegel was recognized by his peers as an outstanding practicing doctor in New York. This honor was part of a rigorous selection process led by MSP Communications and published in New York Super Doctors, featured in The New York Times Sunday Magazine on May 4, 2025.
