Pediatric Dermatology: Common Skin Conditions in Children

Published on March 4, 2025

Children’s skin is delicate and more susceptible to skin conditions. Understanding these common childhood skin issues can help parents know when to seek medical care. Pediatric Dermatology focuses on diagnosing and treating skin conditions in children to maintain healthy skin.

Common Skin Conditions in Children

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions in children. It causes dry, itchy, and inflamed skin, often appearing in patches on the face, elbows, and knees.

Its symptoms are:

  • Red, itchy rashes,
  • Dry, scaly patches, and
  • Skin thickening with repeated scratching

Managing eczema includes using gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers, avoiding triggers like harsh soaps and allergens, and applying topical treatments prescribed by a pediatric dermatologist.

In severe cases, prescription creams or oral medications may be needed. Pediatric Dermatology specialists can help create a personalized skin care plan for your child.

Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is a common irritation caused by prolonged exposure to moisture, friction, or yeast overgrowth.

Its symptoms are:

  • Red, inflamed skin in the diaper area,
  • Discomfort, especially during diaper changes, and
  • Small red bumps or peeling skin

Changing diapers frequently, using barrier creams with zinc oxide, and allowing the skin to breathe can help. If the rash persists, a pediatric dermatologist may recommend medicated creams.

Impetigo

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection that often affects toddlers and young children. It appears as red sores that burst and develop a honey-colored crust.

Its symptoms are:

  • Blisters or red sores around the mouth, nose, and hands,
  • Itchy, oozing lesions that crust over and
  • Swollen lymph nodes in severe cases

Mild cases can be treated with topical antibiotic creams, while more extensive infections may require oral antibiotics. Keeping the affected area clean and preventing scratching helps reduce the spread.

Warts

Warts are small, rough growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They commonly appear on the hands, feet, and fingers.

Its symptoms are:

  • Raised, rough bumps,
  • Black dots (clotted blood vessels) within the wart, and
  • Pain or discomfort if located on weight-bearing areas like the soles of the feet

Most warts go away on their own, but persistent ones may need treatments like cryotherapy (freezing), laser therapy, or prescription medications. Our board-certified dermatologists can recommend the best option for your child.

Ringworm (Tinea Corporis)

Despite its name, ringworm is a fungal infection not caused by a worm. It results in a circular, scaly rash with a clear center.

Its symptoms are:

  • Itchy, red, ring-shaped rash,
  • Scaling and cracking skin, and
  • Spreading patches, if untreated

Topical antifungal creams are effective, but severe cases may require oral antifungal medication. Keeping the affected area dry and clean is essential.

Hives (Urticaria)

Hives are red, itchy welts that appear suddenly due to allergic reactions, infections, or other triggers.

Its symptoms are:

  • Raised, itchy welts that come and go,
  • Swelling around the affected areas and
  • Discomfort or burning sensation

Antihistamines help relieve itching and swelling. Identifying and avoiding triggers can prevent future outbreaks. If hives persist or become severe, consult a pediatric dermatologist.

When to See a Pediatric Dermatologist

While many skin issues can be managed at home, some require expert care. If your child’s skin condition is persistent, painful, or affecting their daily life, it’s best to seek professional advice. A pediatric dermatologist can provide accurate diagnoses and effective treatment options.

At Westchester Center for Dermatology, our specialists understand children’s unique skin care needs. We provide advanced treatments for eczema, warts, or hives to keep your child’s skin healthy.
