How Does Botox Treat Wrinkles Around the Eyes?

Published on August 20, 2015

No matter how careful you may be with your skin’s health, fine lines and wrinkles are an unavoidable part of aging for many people. This is especially common around the outside corners of the eyes, an area with delicate skin that is often damaged through sun exposure, harsh hygiene products, toxins in the air, and constantly squinting. This is why many patients have turned to Botox injections to treat these cosmetic issues without the need for invasive surgeries.

Where Do Wrinkles Come From?

Also referred to as crow’s feet, the fine lines around our eyes can develop for a variety of reasons. For many patients, it is nothing more than their genetics that causes these wrinkles. Others will notice these lines when they are constantly squinting from the sun or when their body slowly begins to produce less collagen and elastin. Some of the steps that patients can take to slow the development of crow’s feet include:

  • Avoiding direct sunlight
  • Wearing sunscreen when out in the sun
  • Quitting smoking
  • Wearing the correct eyeglasses/contact lenses
  • Maintaining a healthy diet

Finding Professional Help from an NYC Dermatologist

Unfortunately, even those that are highly protective of their skin might notice lines at some point in their life. For these patients, Botox injections could be an ideal long-term solution. Botox is actually a toxin that is injected into the muscles that control the skin around our eyes. This perfectly safe toxin paralyzes the muscles and allows them to relax. In turn, the skin shifts back into its natural position to reduce lines and wrinkles.

What to Expect During and After Botox Injections

This is a quick and safe cosmetic treatment that can generally be carried out in as little as 15 minutes with absolutely no anesthesia required. Your dermatologist will begin by marking off the injection sites and then use a fine needle to inject Botox directly into the muscles. There is the possibility of light bruising for the first 24 hours, and patients should avoid over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication as it can increase the bruising.

Most patients will notice a change to their appearance within just a few days and be able to enjoy smooth and toned skin for upwards of six months. If you are ready to look years younger, then please contact Westchester Center for Dermatology and set up your own consultation to see if Botox is right for you.
